This site is currently being redeveloped. Although it will work fine it will continue to look terrible for a while yet. Sorry!

My mail server runs Zimbra, which is nigh on perfect for my needs (vast number of domains, vanishing few actual 'users'). Presently it runs on a PowerEdge 2600 under Ubuntu 8.04lts, as Zimbra only test/certify their code for the lts releases of Ubuntu.

Except they have decided that the new release will now be 64-bit *only*; no 32-bit release for what is probably a vast majority of the 'community edition' (ie free-as-in-beer) users. Now a 32-bit machine can be plenty powerful enough for the task (and with the recent bug found in 64-bit VMs probably safer in fact too!) but they clearly want all their users to upgrade their machines so have gone the 64-only route.

I'm not especially looking to change from the Zimbra suite to something else - I decided on it two years ago when looking at the various options - but likewise I'm worried about keeping a historic version around once Ubuntu8.04lts drops. So I've been doing the eBay thing again and just bought what is supposed to be a 64-bit machine (yet another PowerEdge - of which I now have six - but this one is a dual-processor 1850). Will collect it tomorrow and do a test install of the new versions before planning the migration though.

In other news … it is wet and cold and bleugh.
