This site is currently being redeveloped. Although it will work fine it will continue to look terrible for a while yet. Sorry!

My dears! I simply must tell you about the most wonderful book I came across in my perambulations on the first day of last weekend.

I had ventured into town for a conference about the effect on one's social life of the new technologies (more about anon) when, arriving un-naturally early for the assignation I decided to attend upon the delightful book emporium of Mr Dillon, or at least-ways the premises now owned by Mr Waterstone which used to be the aforementioned University Book Shop.

Intending to only pass the minutes, my eye was caught by a set of the most entrancing dust-jackets depicting a young lady of the finest quality, dressed quite á la mode with the most wonderful 'steampunk' goggles about her top hat. Indeed her demeanour was quite enchanting!

The name of the heroine of these novels was a Miss Alexia Tarabotti who lives in a world of Vampires, Dirigibles, Werewolves, Parasols, Queen Victoria … and afternoon tea. Quite simply the perfect milieu for the most wonderful stories.

They are written by a Miss Gail Carriger who, whilst being from the colonies, certainly understands the British nature and love of afternoon tea – and treacle tart. One reviewer has seen fit to describe her work as "delicious rapier wit that recalls Austen and P.G.Wodehouse", and I must say I entirely concur.

The simply worst facet of these books is that they are not periodicals, however, as I have already read the first two and suspect that I shall have read the third from frontispiece to backboard within but a few more hours. And whilst Miss Carriger (Link to twittergailcarriger) informs her public that there are two more novels under creation they shall not be with us until next year! Oh woe is me that I shall have to wait such an extended period. It is simply too unbearably long a period to be kept in suspense!
