Yesterday afternoon, while doing some yak shaving with cables, I opened a cupboard I haven't seen inside of in years and found lots of old paperwork; mostly bills and statements from 1995-2004.
Apart from the OMG! factor of seeing how much things cost back then (petrol = cheap, computer parts = very expensive) they are mostly so out of date now that I don't even still have the same accounts, so I'm shredding them.
The trouble is, while shredding such things is the right thing to do for personal security and reducing the possibility of the documents getting intercepted and used for identity theft the resulting thousands of paper shreds are not able to be re-cycled (at least not in the London Borough of Camden where I live), which seems rather wasteful. Once I fill each sack up and squash it down it becomes quite solid and almost a building material. Papier maché tree truck sections maybe?
Separately, I have a load of glass, paper and cans for re-cycling, but another thing the borough council did a few years ago was to remove the doorstep collection of materials for re-cycling from blocks of flats. Now, people who live in expensive houses get the service but those here don't. No fair!
